Steven, Port Hedland

Bowel cancer champion

Steven’s story, Port Hedland

Steven was living a busy, active life, working as a truck driver and labourer, on a regular two-weeks-on, two-weeks-off schedule, with time for holidays in between.

Life was steady and normal, until he started experiencing ongoing stomach pain and severe soreness that wouldn’t go away.

Eventually, the pain became too much to ignore. Steven went to the hospital, had a scan where bowel cancer was discovered, and was soon sent to Perth for treatment. In September 2024, he underwent surgery to remove the tumour, followed by chemotherapy.

The diagnosis changed everything. But he’s staying strong, finding joy in watching movies, listening to music, and going fishing when he can.

Throughout this journey, Steven says the support of his family and friends has helped him through the toughest times.

Steven’s advice:

“If you experience any symptoms, go get it checked as soon as possible.”

Steven’s story is a reminder to listen to your body. If something doesn’t feel right, get it checked. Finding cancer early gives you the best chance at recovery and more time to enjoy the things and people you love.

Bowel cancer screening

Bowel cancer screening kits are designed for people who don’t have any noticeable symptoms of bowel cancer.

If you don’t have any bowel cancer symptoms and you’re eligible, it is recommended you participate in the free National Bowel Cancer Screening Program for people aged 50-74.

If you do have possible bowel cancer symptoms, it’s recommended that you see your doctor, clinic nurse or health worker without delay.

Remember, the earlier cancer is found, the better your chances of survival. So, make sure you participate in free screening at every opportunity and see your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms.
