Melanoma champion

It’s lucky my wife spotted the melanoma on my back a few years ago. Keep an eye on the areas your loved ones can’t see.

Denis’s story

Retiree Denis hadn’t noticed anything unusual before his wife Ann pointed out an odd looking skin spot on his back after he got out of the shower one day in 2013. It was a red spot she hadn’t seen before, about the size of a pin head.

When Denis went in to have his skin spot checked, he was advised he had to have it cut out. He now goes in for quarterly check-ups to be safe.

Denis’s advice

‘Keep an eye on the areas your loved ones can’t see’.

Checking your own skin

Skin cancers can grow quickly, so it’s important to become familiar with your own skin (including skin not normally exposed to the sun) through regular self-checks. Find out the steps and some examples of what to look for.

Consult a doctor as soon as possible if you notice any new or changed spots, moles or freckles. Changes to look out for include shape, colour or size.
